The Northern Way in a discussion at the House of Commons

Kevan Carrick joined The Northern Way in a discussion at the House of Commons with the All Party Urban Development Group in consultation on their report “Next Steps: A Regeneration Agenda for the Next Government”. The All Party Group of MPs have, with research from Centre for Cities, produced guidance for the next government. The paper is “a curate’s egg”, good in parts, bad in others. It recommends public sector investment needs to increase the housing supply targeted at areas where need is greatest, the implication here is that is the South East.

The next government should pick up the pace of devolution to local authorities by introducing tax incentive funds in the first year, and then localised business rates before the next general election – this bodes well for the North East Region.

Limit planning reform after the first year of the next government and increase the use of planning performance agreements. Again, bringing stability to the system would be very helpful to make it more effective and efficient in delivery.

Focus on increasing the housing supply and adjust stamp duty to encourage greater investment in the rented sector. Again, a much needed encouragement but the limitation of the investment funds working with the social housing sector needs to be amended to remove the complexity of setting up such a fund.

The meeting which was a small discussion with the members of Parliament; Centre for Cities; Professor Michael Parkinson; The Northern Way; Yorkshire Forward; and One North East debated these matters and the impact they would have on the North East and North of England Regions.
